New Program to Get More People Riding Bikes to More Places
CINCINNATI – Queen City Bike announced today that it has received a $10,000 grant from The Greater Cincinnati Foundation (GCF) to help launch a new program to get more people riding bicycles to more places in the region everyday.
The Bicycle Friendly Destinations Program will work with area employers, retailers, government agencies, and arts and cultural organizations to make it easy for people to reach and use their facilities on a bicycle. The overall goal of the project is to increase the use of bicycles for all kinds of trips, whether to work, to go shopping, or just to run errands in the neighborhood.
Queen City Bike will provide advice to organizations on what they need to do to become a Bike Friendly Destination, and will publicly recognize those that succeed in May 2011. The program will help organizations of all kinds become more attractive places to which to ride, from small retailers who need to know what kind of parking their neighborhood customers need, to large employers who want to encourage more people to commute by bike.
“Getting more people to use bicycles for everyday transportation benefits everyone,” according to Gary Wright, President of Queen City Bikes. “It reduces pollution, cuts down on traffic and parking congestion, and is good for your health.” Wright went on to say, “More and more cities are realizing that supporting bicycles is important for their future. The Zipp OVCX Cyclocross Tour already appears to be headed toward record-busting attendance numbers for the 2010 season. Despite a nationwide trend of competitors waiting later to preregister, promoters for September’s two-day Kings Cross CX Weekend and October’s three-day Cincinnati UCI Festival report that pre-registration statistics for their events continue to show a 100% increase in entries over the same time period last year.
The early and dramatic increase in early registrations bucks a national trend. Pre-registration for bike races throughout the economic recovery of 2010 has been skewing later than previous years, with many events reportedly receiving 80% or more of their pre-entries during the final 72 hours. According to Ross Krause of BikeReg.com, “We certainly see events, mostly road races, where people are not worried about their category filling and they are registering much later. Quick-filling fields such as Men’s 4 and 5 are still filling up quite quickly, but others have seemed to lag this year then pick up just before registration closes.” It’s a trend that’s also being reported to varying degrees in running races and other forms of entertainment. Lou Casper, the Outdoor Entertainment Manager of the New Jersey State Fair, said recently, “Early ticket sales are reported down for concerts all over the Read the rest of this entry »

With just over six weeks to go until the Cincinnati UCI3 cyclocross weekend, pre-registration numbers are holding steady at 100% improvement over 2009. The biggest hikes are with the women’s 3/4 categories, which are up over 200%. Are the women’s fields going to trend higher all fall cx season? We’re excited to find out.
On a related matter, the Katie Compton women’s cyclocross clinic scheduled for October 8th is now open for registration. Last year’s clinic sold out the 40 spots, so get your reservation in early.

Background
On January 1, 2009, the qualified bicycle commuting reimbursement was added to the list of qualified transportation fringe benefits covered in section 132 (f) of the Internal Revenue Service Code.
The Bicycle Commuter Act was in front of Congress for seven years, and finally passed as an inclusion to the larger Renewable Energy Tax Credit legislation in 2008. The original intent of the provision was to provide a simple, equitable solution to put cyclists on the same footing as people who receive qualified transportation benefits (QTF)’s for taking transit or driving (or parking, actually) their cars to and from work. It was intended that the bike commuting benefit would be treated the same as the other QTF’s.

by Geraint Perry for Podium Insight: It wasn’t billed as a twilight race but the Madeira Centennial Criterium finished in almost complete darkness with Issac Howe (Mountain Khakis) appearing out of the night to take an impressive sprint victory! The nations crit riders have been split this weekend between the Tour of Americas Dairyland, Manhattan Beach Grand Prix and this Ohio Crit Weekend so it was a mostly amateur field that tackled the first in a 3-race series that is headlined by the USACrits race in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Cincinnati on June 26th.
To kick off the weekend the inaugural Madeira event was held over a

challenging course that included two 180-degree corners that would test the 100-rider field to their limit. Throughout the entire event no significant breakaways would form with arguably the best effort coming from Mark Hekman (Mountain Khakis) who in the early running stayed away for a couple of laps.
At the midway point a malfunction with the finishing inflatable arch caused a nasty crash that saw a local rider taken to the hospital and the race neutralized for 15 minutes. Following the resumption and in the gathering

gloom the pace shot up and the race was clearly destined for a bunch sprint. Team Aerocat took the responsibility for the pace-making in the final few laps but it was Issac Howe who jumped the lead-out trains into the final corner and was never headed, finishing with a solid margin over Marco Aledia (Kenda p/b Geargrinder) and evergreen Emilie Abraham (Aerocat).
